3. Sending a note or calling someone in need of an emotional lift doesn’t take a lot of time, yet does the heart so much good. I sent a handwritten thank you note to someone, who replied, “You made my day.” While generic e-card greetings are wonderful, there’s nothing like receiving a personal greeting addressed to you. From Alone Together: “Getting a letter is so special because it is meant only for you … It feels so complimentary, especially nowadays, with people multitasking more and more, for someone to actually go out of their way and give their full attention to something for your sake for five or ten minutes. What is flattering is that they take that amount of time … that they’re actually giving up that time.” In an opinion column, “Will Facetime prevail over Facebook?” by Joe Scarborough, host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe and guest columnist for POLITICO, said: “There are still some human emotions that cannot be adequately expressed in 140 characters or less.”
